The Tennessee and Alabama construction community received a booster shot recently when local industry veteran Rickey Moore was named Executive Director of the Mid-South Carpenters Regional Council Training Trust Fund (TTF).
Mr. Moore has worked for more than three decades as a union carpenter, working his way up from carpenter helper and apprentice to lead foreman and superintendent, primarily for General Contractor Raines Brothers, Inc. His work can be seen on such iconic projects as the I-Max theater, Discovery Museum, many church and school additions, the steam generator storage buildings at Sequoyah and Watts Bar Nuclear plants, plus numerous other commercial projects.
As the new Executive Director of the Mid-South TTF, Mr. Moore will oversee seven training facilities and several carpenter and millwright professional instructors. His guidance will steer theoretical classroom learning, skill training in the shop areas, and one-on-one mentoring and training on jobsites.
The program trains members of the Southeastern Carpenters and Southern States Millwrights Regional Councils. The overall training curriculum is based on a $250 million program developed by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters International Training Fund. With this support, members obtain highly-developed skills, supply productive and safe work, and display the right attitude to often become the jobsite's leaders.
Mr. Moore is, himself, an accomplished leader on and off the jobsite. His teaching career began 21 years ago and today encompasses all levels of apprenticeship classes, first aid/CPR/AED, forklift, aerial lift, rigging, scaffolding, OSHA, confined space, fall protection, Construction Master Pro calculator, Silica awareness, ICRA, concrete forms, builders level and total station.
He also serves on several area high school advisory boards as well as the workforce development board of Chattanooga.
Mr. Moore was the carpenter training coordinator of the Tri-State Carpenters & Millwrights Training Center in Chattanooga before accepting the Mid-South TTF Executive Director position. He replaces Mr. Greg Williams, who recently retired as Executive Director of the TTF. One of his first major projects will be to supervise the construction of a new training facility in Nashville.
“The future of construction depends on providing more and better training opportunities for our members. That means having clean, proficient training centers and well-trained, highly experienced instructors who have a passion for passing on as much knowledge as possible to tomorrow’s jobsite leaders,” Moore said. “I am making it my priority to achieve that goal. I also will work to increase apprenticeship numbers, as well as the number of journeymen taking skill-enhancement classes.”
