Leaders of the Mid-South TTF, Southeastern Carpenters and Southern States Millwrights

Ground breaks on a multi-million-dollar workforce training facility in Nashville suburb of La Vergne, Tennessee

Work is officially underway to build a technologically-advance, comprehensive carpenter and millwright training center in the Nashville suburb of La Vergne, Tennessee. The 25,000 structure will be built on four acres of land along Veterans Memorial Parkway, near U.S. Hwy. 41, Murfreesboro Highway.

The $5 million project is being done by the Mid-South Carpenters Regional Council Training Trust Fund (TTF). The TTF trains members of the Southeastern Carpenters and Southern States Millwrights regional councils. Recently, those representing these organizations, along with state and local officials, teamed to kickoff construction at a ceremonial groundbreaking event.

“Our vision is to prepare a local workforce of construction industry professionals with the skills needed to enable these men and women to secure an excellent quality of life for themselves and their families,” said Rickey Moore, Director of the Mid-South Carpenters Regional Council Training Trust Fund. “This facility has the potential to provide more jobs to LaVergne residents and build long-term residency into the community.”

The facility will be a two-story stately, safe structure with maintained grounds and green spaces. Inside, training will cater to what’s needed on job sites around the region. For example:

  • Because of COVID-19 and in response to the critical need to protect patients and staff at healthcare facilities during construction work, there will be a comprehensive mockup to hone skills in Construction ICRA (Infection Control Risk Assessment).
  • Scaffold training will prepare carpenters for work in nuclear power plants
  • Two mechatronics/robot stations will be used to train for automotive plant projects.
  • A conveyor training area will be used to train on floor conveyor and power and free monorail systems, which are used in many manufacturing processes such as automotive and food and beverage
  • Classrooms, conference rooms, and computer labs will also be used for training and leadership development.

Carpenter Skills taught there will include:

  • Metal Stud Framing
  • Drywall
  • Doors and Hardware
  • Flooring
  • Heavy Form / Concrete
  • Scaffolding

Millwright coursework will include:

  • Compressors and Pumps
  • Conveyors 
  • Flowserve
  • Gas and Steam Turbine
  • Machinery Alignment
  • Welding
  • Mechanical Print Reading

Safety training includes:

  • OSHA 10 and 30
  • Confined Space
  • Fall Protection
  • Hazard Communication
  • AED/First Aid

Soft-skill training is also offered on topics such as

  • Leadership
  • Jobsite Communication
  • Human Performance

Curriculum and programming at the La Vergne Training Center will benefit from resources provided by a $250 million annual training program of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC), because the Mid-South Training Trust Fund is an affiliate of the UBC. As a result, program participants will receive the best technological, skills-based training for all aspects of the carpentry and millwright trades. All equipment and instruction will be closely regulated and monitored by the US Department of Labor and will abide by all OSHA standards. 

The LaVergne training program is funded with private money from contractors who employ those who train at the Center, meaning all of this is at no cost to the taxpayer.

Benefits Beyond Construction

  • The TTF also plans to adopt a local middle and high school and work with staff and students on a variety of fun and educational projects.

  • Building the structure will create jobs, as local carpenters will be used to construct the facility.  

  • The TTF has the capability and structure in place to provide job placement assistance for graduates of the apprenticeship program.

  • The facility will also support workforce development for specific programs to cater to the professional needs and unique circumstances for working women and military veterans
